Late S Cars
The following changes were made somewhere during the run of 140 S cars. Cars with these features are sometimes called "series two" S's. I don't believe all these change occured in a single car. They were applied over a short period of time with a few transition cars having some, but not all of the features.
- The half-shafts were changed from U-joints to CV-joints. The flanges extending from the differential and the wheels are much thicker, and extend further to bolt to the CV-joints.
- The opening at the rear of the rocker panels that directs air toward the brakes was made larger.
- Frame supports from the front bulkhead were extended about nine inches further towards the front of the car.
- Air conditioning became an option. (The Coltrin book identifies chassis 4482 as the first car to have air conditioning.) When A/C was fitted, the dual distributors were replaced with a single, 12-wire distributor on one cam to make room for the A/C equipment.
- The disk brakes went from solid rotors to vented rotors all around. The calipers were spaced apart with 15mm blocks to accommodate the thicker disks.
- The center console with the six instruments was made of plastic instead of fiberglass.
- The front frame cross rail, which had lightening-holes in it, is replaced with a solid rail to increase stiffness. (I'm not 100% sure this was true with all cars.)
